In the early years, Bengal and Madras Native Infantries of the East India Company were stationed at the fort. Alongside with the convicts that were transferred over from Bengkulu and sent over from India, they participated in the Muharram celebrations The Native infantry regiments contributed to the defence of Penang until the East India Company was abolished in 1858.
