Historically, the Jalan Sekerat area consisted of Malay, Peranakan Jawi as well as Indian Muslim settlements.

The name Jalan Sekerat means roughly "one short road". Until Transfer Road was laid out in the third quarter of the 19th century, villagers get there by sampan going up the waterway that today forms part of the Forgotten Canals of George Town, all the way to the Dato Koyah Shrine.
